Our Story

Mohini’s Shawl is named in memory of a dear friend and colleague’s daughter, a young woman full of compassion for those less fortunate. She represents to us the tremendous potential of young people in India to address the many difficult societal problems facing those with disabilities. It is men and women like Mohini, talented and generous, who will improve the lives of vulnerable citizens through advocacy for education, social justice and equal rights. Her spirit continues to inspire our efforts.

Why a shawl? To us, a shawl is warm, comforting and inclusive. Each one is different, each one is beautiful. A shawl represents the values central to our vision of children in developing countries with special needs reaching their full potential.
Through donations and the sale of locally handcrafted Indian textiles, Mohini’s Shawl raises funds to support our work.

About Us

Although Mohini’s Shawl is a new non-profit, we have a 10-year history of providing training, technical assistance, mentoring and consultation to several different organizations in various cities in India. The organization grew out of a 2007 series of teaching sessions, facilitated by distance technology, between a small school in Lucknow, India and the Center for Development and Disability (CDD) at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2008 we made our first trip to India to meet our colleagues in Lucknow. Since that first memorable training on the roof of the school, shaded by a large orange tent decorated with elephants, we have returned every year and expanded our project to other cities in India – Mumbai, Chandigarh and Delhi—as well as Dubai, Jordan and Sri Lanka.

Mohini’s Shawl is a non-profit organization that is dependent on donations and our social enterprise, a textiles store, to support our programs.

Mohini’s Shawl, Inc. is a registered charity and a 501(c)3. Donations are tax- deductible and can be made through a secure site using PayPal.

Using a social enterprise model, funds are raised to support Mohini’s Shawl through the sale of beautiful, handmade Indian textiles. Currently, sales occur through private home parties and exhibits at the Southwest Conference on Disabilities. A store for web-based sales is under construction.
